More than half of the world’s species live in the rainforest.

The rainforest (also sometimes called the tropical forest) is the term used to describe the very special types of forests in certain parts of the world. Forests that are specifically rainforests are usually located near the equator, with a hot and humid year-round climate and a lot of rainfall every year. (Hence the name!)

Rainforests are considered very special because of all their amazing features! One of the most well-known and spectacular aspects of the rainforest is its tremendous numbers of plants and animals! Rainforests usually have a never-ending canopy of trees and are the home to millions of types of plants and animals! (In fact, more than half of the world’s plant and animal species live in the rainforest, even though rainforests take up only about 6% of the Earth’s surface!)

Unfortunately, rainforests are in danger! There are many things being done that are putting these beautiful landscapes at risk, such as the cutting down of trees. Trees that are needed by people for wood are often cut down from the rainforests, and the plants and animals in this very special part of the world are now struggling. It’s estimated that every hour, a space in the rainforest the size of 4,000 football fields is destroyed. Preserving the rainforests is very important; the many trees in the rainforests help us have plenty of oxygen to breathe and they serve as the home to so many creatures!

Preserving the rainforest
Here are some ideas of things you can do to help save the rainforests!

  • When you buy products made from wood such as paper and furniture, find out where the trees came from. Support responsible tree loggers who get their trees from the right places!
  • Recycle as much as you can. The less unnecessary paper you use, the more trees you can save!
  • Write letters to people in the government or companies who collect trees to tell them what you think about saving the rainforests!

What other ideas do you have??
